Elton Lin

Elton is the founder and CEO of ILUMIN Education. He graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from UC Davis and completed his MDiv in Theology from Trinity International University near Chicago, IL. He has a wealth of experience and has worked with teens for almost twenty years, including in recent years being the Lead Consultant for the Bay Area’s largest educational consulting firm. He was also selected as the company’s Consultant of the Year in 2012.

Elton believes that success in life begins with passion and a plan. Motivated students understand themselves and embrace their true passions. Mature students know that in order to pursue their passion, they need a plan. Elton has consistently and successfully helped students grow in motivation and maturity, core traits sought after by the top colleges.

Elton’s other strength is helping students develop their own signature or capstone project. As an entrepreneur himself, he has helped many students start viable and sustainable businesses, non-profits and independent projects. Projects like these tap into a student’s true passion and become the centerpiece of their college application.

Elton is a member of the Western Association for College Admissions Counseling and an associate member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association.

 

John Chen
BA (UCLA)
Education Consultant

John graduated from UCLA with a BA in Business/Economics and is a licensed CPA. He previously was a data analysis and management consultant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers working with clients like Google, VISA and EA Games. In recent years, he followed his dream of empowering youth by serving as a Senior Academic Consultant for the Bay Area’s largest educational consulting firm. His vast business, finance, and hi-tech experience provide a deep well of knowledge to guide students towards professional development and getting into the right schools.

In addition, John served as his college fellowship’s resume and interview coach for the past eight years, helping numerous students obtain their first professional jobs in fields such as medicine, biotechnology, computer programming, engineering and more. He also has over 15 years of experience mentoring, tutoring, and teaching hundreds of students of all age groups in various church and non-profit organizations.

Having attended Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, he understands first-hand the unique challenges of growing up in a hyper-competitive environment. John is passionate about helping students realize their full potential and nothing gives him more joy than seeing students become who they were created to be.

John is a member of the Western Association for College Admissions Counseling.

 

Karsen Cheung
BSc (LSE)
Counselor (London)

An experienced e-commerce professional, Karsen has worked at Bain & Company, Procter & Gamble (P&G), Expedia | Hotels.com, ING−Bank of Beijing, and the London 2012 Olympic Games. He was Vice President of Talent Management at AIESEC (the world’s largest student-run organisation) where one of his projects was to advise an NGO in Uganda that focused on youth development and empowerment. His expertise ranges from editing CVs and cover letters, to providing dissertation and career advice.

Karsen holds a BSc in business management from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He graduated from Shanghai American School with an International Baccalaureate (Bilingual) Diploma and an American Curriculum High School Diploma. His achievements led to offers from more than ten top universities globally and were recognised by the US National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Having lived in London, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei, Karsen is familiar with the British, American and Hong Kong education systems.

He once hitchhiked from London to Malaysia in 24 hours without using any money, travelling a total of 10,500 km on seven different modes of transport.

 

Esther Lau
BS (Cambridge)
Counselor (London)

As a Prince Philip Scholar and a scholar of Churchill College, Esther graduated from the University of Cambridge in Natural Sciences (Biochemistry). Having discovered her passion for science communication, she worked at Nature Reviews (Macmillan Science and Education), a collection of world-renowned scientific journals, and is now an editor at The Lancet (Elsevier) which publishes the latest high-impact medical research. She was the top student of her year group at Dulwich College Shanghai where she gained her International Baccalaureate (Bilingual) Diploma and IGCSE certificates.

Esther, who received offers from seven top universities, is experienced in preparing students for Oxbridge interviews, tutoring, as well as editing personal statements and various academic writing.
